Mystics and scientists. LEELA Revisited (part 1)

As I take a backseat from political activity, my mind advices “C’mon, your innings in politics is finished for now. You had taken a sabbatical from your spiritual search in 2011 for a few years. Now that sabbatical is over, come back and focus on the real purpose of life – the self-discovery of the Truth. Your involvement and participation, in an objective and detached manner, has been fruitful during a crucial part of this country’s history. You can go back rest assured, that India’s political churning has begun. One phase of Leela (the game of life) is over.”

Before I quit my job for the India against Corruption movement, I was exploring the four crucial questions to seek the Ultimate Reality.  Now these existential questions, which I had falsely imagined to have suppressed, have again become vehement, demanding attention.

  1. What is existence?
  2. Who am I?
  3. What is my role in this Leela – the game of life?
  4. And, finally, how best can I play this role?

So, in this new series of writings – I intend to share the journey of self-discovery in a much deeper manner than my earlier blog series. This journey will take us into the realms of quantum physics and spirituality. There will be many original theories; also we shall borrow ideas and sometimes language from various scientists, physicists, philosophers and philosophies, wherever needed. It will be my attempt to simplify, even over-simplify complex matters so that the lay person can understand.

Come; buckle your seatbelts as we begin this wonderful and exciting voyage. I, on my part, will abandon Rajas (the action, excitement and passion) of political activities for sattva (purity, peace and love) and meditate, reflect and ponder.

The theory of everything has a common theory to explain everything
The first question that I ask myself is about existence. What exactly is Reality?
What is its building block of the Universe? Is there some particle or cell or atom that is the smallest part of reality which can be multiplied again and again to make the Universe? What is this TOE – the Theory of Everything?

Around five centuries back, the scientists told the mystics “Guys, you are using faith, prayers and meditation to explain the TOE. That’s not done. It is so unscientific and unverifiable. We, the intellectuals of the scientific fraternity will give you the true picture of Reality.”

The mystic and scientist resides within each of us
The mystics were upset. They said, “Instead of the objective knowledge that you use, in which you find out things through experiments, we SEE knowledge. We are “seers”. We go into deep meditation and quite our minds and the Truth starts flowing into us. In this state, we understand the characteristics of the forces of nature.”The scientists laughed “What a load of rubbish! Give us some time and we will give you the True Reality based on scientific principles of enquiry. You have just imagined some stuff and peddle it as your Truth.  All your understanding is just based on faith and belief.”

“That is neither fair nor true. We have extremely rigid methods of investigation and our philosophies have to pass various examinations and tests before they are even considered.” the seers protested “These means of knowledge are reasoning or logic, Perception, Inference, Comparison, Postulation, written scriptures by meditating saints and Verbal Testimony. All our books and scriptures are not mumbo-jumbo, but based on subjective knowledge. A searchlight of reason and logic permeates all our knowledge.”

The scientists smiled with amusement “You mystics correlate mind and matter. Actually, these two (mind and matter) are two independent realms. Matter is dead and completely separate from living beings. The world is to be exploited for development of mankind. This exploitation will lead to huge advances in the field of science, technology, organizing of cities, political structures, medicines, agriculture, economy and similar.”

A condescending smile escaped the mystics, “Go ahead and search for answers. I am sure that science will lead to lots of inventions and understandings, but eventually, you will realize that what we are proposing is not far from what you might discover. Wish you all the best.”

So, the mystics went back to their study and meditation. The scientists intensified their works in all branches. Philosopher Rene Descartes’ materialistic theory (1644 AD) called Cartesian principles considered the world as a machine to be used for mankind, dominated the thought process of the world. New elements were found, technological development became predominant, fertilizers were created, new strains of cattle and animals were created, modern medicine and diagnostic machines were developed, new stars and constellations were found, economy prospered in many parts of the world and human life expectancy increased.

But due to the Cartesian worldview, individuals started identifying themselves as separate mind and separate body parts with the futile expectation of the mind trying to control the various compartments of talent, feeling, beliefs, and individuality. This led to endless inner conflicts generating confusions, stress and frustrations. This inner fragmentation alienated us from nature and from our fellow beings. This view was further extended to society which got split into different nations, races, religions, groups and political entities leading to the present ecological, political, social and cultural crises.

But, what happened in medicine and physics in the past few centuries was interesting.

Modern medicine made outstanding progress, creating high technology tools and equipments for diagnosis. Breakthrough in medicines to treat diseases including TB, leprosy and cancer were made. Surgeries were fine-tuned and improved. Life expectancy increased every decade. But, there were some illnesses that modern allopathic medicine could not treat. New life-style diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, asthma were consuming people and modern medicine was finding it tough to counter these. Most of these diseases were stress and mind related. The mind was affecting the body and vice versa.

“Could the theory of those mystics that we left behind, of interconnectivity between mind and matter, be correct?” the doctors started wondering. Soon, further study and research led them to questioning the earlier concepts and they realized that over 80% of all diseases are psychosomatic (caused or aggravated by mental factors). Maybe the seers were right after all!

The developments in physics were still more exciting.

Physics was developing rapidly and major discoveries and inventions were being made. A smug satisfaction was visible in physicists who felt that they had understood the laws of nature based on physics. Lord Kelvin in the 1880s even said that “There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now. All that remains is more and more precise measurement.”

But they were soon to be surprised. In 1927, German physicist Werner Heisenberg published the “uncertainty principle” that showed that the outcome of an experiment depended on the experimenter. Thus from an observer, we became a participant in every activity of the world. Matter was not separate from consciousness. There was connection between each and every being and what was considered as inert matter. The Cartesian principle of materialism was collapsing. Could the mystics who talked about synthesis and connectivity between mind and matter be right? New experiments and theories in this new physics or quantum physics was turning classical physics on its head and proving this connectivity, absolutely.
The probability of the cat being dead or alive is equal.  Only when the box is opened and an observation performed does the wave function collapse into one of the two states.
The scientists huddled together – is the mystic’s worldview right? The debate rages.

In these wonderful and exciting times, let us join the debate. It is time for us mystics to speak the language of science and develop a bridge between science and spirituality.

  1. Clear and intriguing. Looking forward to the next threads. Hope to get some answers to some of my questions here.

  2. Clear and intriguing. Looking forward to the next threads. Hope to get some answers to some of my questions here.

  3. "Give us some time and we will give you the True Reality based on scientific principles of enquiry."

Science is based far more in Roger Bacon's ideas about EVIDENCE, than any materialism of Decartes. Lord Kelvin's premature claims notwithstanding, Science doesn't claim to explain anything like a "True Reality". Such claims belong strictly to the mystics whose justification, once you get past the obscurantism consists of "because I strongly believe so".

Science only ever evaluates one possible claim or theory against another by using Reason to examine the available Evidence, which scientists attempt to augment by conducting experiments in which the two theories are compared (trying to keep all other things equal) against the cornerstone of physical reality. Science understands that it can only every approach the truth asymptotically, that all scientific answers are provisional and subject to correction given better quality (experimental) data or a better theory.

Alas, these are the very principles which mystical claims reject. So mysticism has little of use to offer science.

  4. Very interesting blog....if I go by Jain Principle of Saptbhangi ( seven folded), reality is perplexing. It is basically consisting of probability waves. Once an observer observes one, others collapse. Double slit experiment, schrodinger's cat and Heisenberg's principle, all point to the same.

  6. Our universe is like an animated ball, everything is just happening, whatever has happened in last second is past and whatever will happen in next second is future. We are not in a position to change either of these two events (past or future). Scientists are saying that our universe is animating at quantum level at every Plank Time with fluctuation in quantum foam (innermost part of universal architecture). In fact, in quantum mechanics we discover that the entire universe is actually a series of probabilities.
The Copenhagen Interpretation and the Many-Worlds Theory
The two major interpretations of quantum theory's implications for the nature of reality are the Copenhagen interpretation and the many-worlds theory. Niels Bohr proposed the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum theory, which asserts that a particle is whatever it is measured to be (for example, a wave or a particle), but that it cannot be assumed to have specific properties, or even to exist, until it is measured. In short, Bohr was saying that objective reality does not exist. This translates to a principle called superposition that claims that while we do not know what the state of any object is, it is actually in all possible states simultaneously, as long as we don't look to check.
To illustrate this theory, we can use the famous and somewhat cruel analogy ofSchrodinger's Cat. First, we have a living cat and place it in a thick lead box. At this stage, there is no question that the cat is alive. We then throw in a vial of cyanide and seal the box. We do not know if the cat is alive or if the cyanide capsule has broken and the cat has died. Since we do not know, the cat is both dead and alive, according to quantum law - in a superposition of states. It is only when we break open the box and see what condition the cat is that the superposition is lost, and the cat must be either alive or dead.
The second interpretation of quantum theory is the many-worlds (or multiverse theory. It holds that as soon as a potential exists for any object to be in any state, the universe of that object transmutes into a series of parallel universes equal to the number of possible states in which that the object can exist, with each universe containing a unique single possible state of that object. Furthermore, there is a mechanism for interaction between these universes that somehow permits all states to be accessible in some way and for all possible states to be affected in some manner. Stephen Hawking and the late Richard Feynman are among the scientists who have expressed a preference for the many-worlds theory.
We all are just silent viewers of this animated sequence and we have nothing to do with it. Start thinking like this and all your problems will look like a very small drop of vast ocean. We all are independent to think / imagine anything but all the actions (animated sequence of this universe) will be performed by the universal server (the real animator of this universe).
Scientists have observed three major constituents of this universe 1st is ordinary (baryonic) matter which is around 4.9%, 2nd is Dark Matter which is around 26.8% and 3rd is Dark Energy which is around 68.3%. Properties & physics of Dark Matter & Dark energy is a great mystery for scientists, physics of black holes which is a central part of major galaxies are also big mystery for scientists. Our observatories are trying to dig these mysteries in their everyday operation but we should try to find other ways of exploring these mysteries like spiritual journey using our consciousness through deep meditation.

    1. I would like to say 'Mysteries' in Science may not be an appropriate word. Within its scope, Science, sooner or later, will find out everything. There will not be any mysteries for Science; only -to-be-verified - topics exist.

  7. From ANANTHU TS
What Mayank Gandhi writes is of special interest to me because I have spent a whole life going through a journey which seems to have parallels to his. I started out by asking fundamental questions about what life is. When doing my studies in Electrical Engineering (1960 to 1965) I was intrigued by what exactly electricity is My Professors told me it is a flow of electrons, but were quite unclear about what exactly this electron is. Like Mayank, I then took a 'sabbatical' from all that inquiry and plunged into India's first movement against corruption, of which JP became the leader (in the initial phase, during the Nav Nirman movement in Gujarat and the students' agitation in Bihar, it was leaderless, which actually made it purer). Then, when in 1977 I saw the message contained in that lovely short story "Animal Farm" being enacted before my eyes, I decided - like Mayank has done - to go back to the drawing board and ask fundamental questions about life and its purpose - the very same four questions that Mayank has listed. It led me to mysticism - its practical or experimental side. That in turn led me to a deeper examination of the science and technology that I had studied. And finally, it led me to clear answers to those four questions, including a clearer understanding of society, social change, and what role each one of us can play in this world. So, I am eagerly reading what Mayank is writing, and, of course, comparing his notes with my own.

    1. Dear Mr. Ananthu, Like you and Mayankbhai, I am also on this journey. You have mentioned that you got clarity to the four questions...can you share/elaborate on that as it would be of immense interest..

  8. Spirituality and Science, completely different, can not compliment each other. For example, we enjoy, the things/actions associated with Festivals. They are colorful, and beautiful and memorable(let us put aside the Caste basted shit society). Science/Rationalists (some kind of idiots) treat these kind of feelings/whatever, as NONE. However, human beings, mostly, existed based on these feelings/relations(whatever). Some dumb-head scientists say all the relations/feelings are based on Material Factors, which is completely wrong. Science does not control human-beings', rather the feelings/relations do. Even if we analyze ourselves, we can understand, we neither live for Material Factors, nor claimed by some dumb-head scientists, not because of -Mighty will survice- kind of theories. At the species' level, it maybe true, I don't know. However, if we examine ourselves, we mostly, live on Relations/Feelings. That is why, many commit suicides, if their companion dies. It has nothing to do with Economic factors. Why I referred Rationalists as some kind of idiots is that, they did not give me answer, when I questioned, why killing other human being is a crime, why not killing a dog or pig is not a crime. These guys are selfish idiots, under the name of rationalism. They want to protect human beings because they belong to that group, and all other livings things are nothing for them.

And till I see Mayank's blog, I suspected these babas or any other Gurus are just some kind of Lunatics/Cheats, who claim they have superpowers. After mayank's own experiment with Energy healing his wife, I started having the belief. Also, Mayank told, he directly evidenced some objects coming out from Photos (as pointed out by Atheists, there is no chance for cheating in this context), and one guy, upfront, could write whatever the question we are going to ask.

  9. Even now, there is no direct evidence, which can make you to interact with God/Consciousness. And that is why Atheists still have valid points.

    1. Not sure how you concluded that there is no evidence. Just because you have not seen the evidence does not mean there is no evidence. The evidence is with in you. You just need to experiment on yourself to see the evidence. The evidence cannot be felt w/ your existing mind which is caused because of your five senses. You need to ascend your mind through meditation to see the evidence and this is the only way I think.

Please read the book dhyana mano prasthanam. It might help you understand the science behind spirituality

  10. My intention is not to refer Western articles only, but this one is interesting. This guy came to India some 20 years ago.

  11. I had mentioned about Saptbhangi..P.C.Mahlonobis has termed it as the first postulate on probability theory in the world history. It says," Syad (Probably)Asti, Syad Nasti,Sayd Asti,Nasti,Syad Avyaktavah (indescribable),syad asti Avyaktavah,Syad Nasti Avyaktavah, syad Asti-Nasti-avyaktavah" So an object can be in any of this seven states, and till you observe it remains in all seven states.

  12. This comment has been removed by the author.

    1. Please read this book

It might help you to find answers to some of your questions. And also help you realize the source of universe.

For more books related to spirituality and science

  13. I had gone to Andheri office to redress my grievances and was asked by Upadhyay to see Mr.mayank Gandhi.I on intuition refused thinking this man is calm inside out will not help me instead may make me calm down.Hon sir , Mr. Mayank Gandhi,Your write up is short.Vedanta has already said that WORLD EXIST FOR THE OBSERVER BECAUSE OF ACTION AND REACTION OF THE OBJECT AND THE OBSERVER. Now the observer will have particular state of Conceptions and world will be obviously MIXED WITH HIS REACTIONS.That explains heisenberg Principle.More over the state of efficiency of the observer's INDRIYAS will also interfere differently. If the subject is having capacity equal to the observer or there about then the end product will be more different each time. The existence cannot be explained. Everybody feels the existence and can not be unknown as it is inseparable part of consciousness.Living system of persons understand the objects of the world doe to system of m consciousness. TO UNDERSTAND CONSCIOUSNESS WE MUST HAVE ANOTHER SYSTEM OF CONSCIOUSNESS,THEN CHAIN WILL GO ON INFINITELY.If you or anybody wants to know more of my meditations revelation may please send e mail addree message from my Facebook account.

  14. Schrodinger's Cat experiment was actually meant to question or introspect the Copenhagen's interpretation of Quantum Mechanics (involving superposition states). He meant to say that if we accept his interpretation, we can extend this superposition to macroscopic level (by using his thought experiment).

In that case we will have a dead and alive cat in the box which would seem absurd to the common sense. Thus he meant that we just don`t know everything yet.

I believe the pattern since ages is that whatever we don`t understand, we attribute that to something mystique, supernatural stuff. It is just that once we attain that knowledge it stops becoming supernatural but natural. e.g. even the phenomenon of rain was considered supernatural in old times.

I believe that science will solve this mystery of superposition as well and may be even more reduced particles will be found with time, until we begin to accept that even the matter is indeed made up of wave.

I believe that what we call observer effect is actually our way of explaining the presently indeterministic things. Things are the way they are, they don`t change because of our observation. We just don`t understand them yet.

But at the same time, yes mind and body are connected, and so is spirituality and science. We will realise that ultimately as we move deeper into both.

  15. This article provides a great food for thought. Thanks Sir.
